Dr Chizuru Nishida, as the Unit Head of the Safe, Healthy and Sustainable Diet Cross-Cutting Unit, leads and coordinates the development of evidence-informed WHO guidance and scientific advice on: 1) diet and health to prevent obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases; and 2) policy actions to improve the food environment and promote healthy diets, including technical implementation tools, to ensure WHO’s guidance and country support are solidly based on science. Since 2019, she has also been serving as the Chair of the Cochrane Nutrition Advisory Board which guides the work and strategic direction of Cochrane Nutrition.
Chizuru has worked in a variety of roles and responsibilities in WHO at all three levels (global, regional and country levels) of the Organization during the last 30 years of her career in WHO, but maintaining the focus of the areas of work to scientific advice on food and nutrition and their impact on health which are the technical areas of her training and expertise.
Since 2003, Chizuru has also been serving as the head of WHO delegation at the Codex Committees on Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) and Food Labelling (CCFL), ensuring and advocating for policy coherence in the development and updating of Codex standards and guidelines not only to protect food safety but also to improve food quality with a view to address increasing global public health problems of obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases.
Chizuru holds a PhD degree in Nutrition Science and a Master’s Degree in Medical Anthropology. She has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and review articles on the areas related to nutrition policy and scientific advice related to dietary goals for the prevention of obesity and noncommunicable diseases.
